As Christmas approaches Barry Hall of St Ives Holidays, recalls his days working in the former Lanham’s Shop.
The business premises have seen many different guises over the last century and in the 70s as well as providing some of the earliest holiday lettings, the High Street premises provided the town’s only off licence serving both the wholesale (hotel & restaurant) and retail trade.
Visitors and residents alike would place their orders at the store for the Christmas period with current director Barry working behind the counter.
He recalled: “People used to come in and collect their orders in the run up to Christmas. But on Christmas eve they’d be back again for the same order having drank the lot already!”
Barry also recalls the shop sold quality paper to artists from the shop displayed in large drawers and told of the poor technology in the store.
“The cash register was very different to modern technology, the most you could ring up was £3 so everything was added up by hand then rung into the till in multiples of £3. It could take a very long time.”
The current St Ives Holiday brand was born in the 1980s when the company’s first website was born. Nowadays technology has moved on somewhat and you can book your holiday online with St Ives Holidays.
